If it is out there, it should be in the Denton’s Web app!
Dentons has long been the dominant business directory in the South West of England, published in hard copy and online.
In more recent years they have developed DentonsWeb recently renamed as dentons.net, a nationwide online business directory to rival Yell and others, and to build upon their online presence, they have now developed mobile apps so that users can find businesses exactly where and when they need them.
They already had an iPhone app but were unhappy with its robustness and the suitability of the code for further enhancement.
They also needed an Android version to cater for the vast and growing number of Android users. Dentons hired Bearded Hen to create a new Android smartphone app which built further upon the functionality of the existing iPhone app.
- Google Maps integration
- Route and location plotting in real time
- Speech-to-text allows searching via voice commands
- Identification of towns and businesses in one spoken command
- All Android devices
Since our involvement and given the need to redevelop their iPhone app as well as handling ongoing development of the Android app, Dentons have now redeveloped for both iOS and Android using (we believe) the Appcelerator Titanium cross-platform development solution. Unfortunately at the time of writing, this has resulted in unstable behaviour on the Android app. We’ve therefore disabled the download link on this page as the app available on Google Play no longer represents the work carried out by Bearded Hen. We wish Dentons well and I’m sure these issues will get fixed, but they do serve to demonstrate that a cross-platform solution is often not as straightforward as the developers and software vendors would like.
Here at Bearded Hen we specialise in native Java and Objective-C app development as we believe that for all but the most straightforward apps it should result in a faster, less resource-hungry app with fewer limitations.
